Proficiency Check | Let's Talk About ADDIE

Here's a quick lesson on ADDIE, a design process in Instructional Design.

One thing to keep in mind while I share all this is that ADDIE may feel like the ideal, but IDs hardly ever have an ideal scenario within their projects. While it's important to have all the stages, they aren't exactly linear in action. But here's my quick explanation. (If you need to read the transcript of this, click here.)

Deliverables at Each Stage

Deliverables exist at each stage of the ADDIE process. And while you won't be asked to create everything in every project, context is important. Here are a few of the deliverables I've created at various stages ADDIE during my career:

Analysis

  • SME interview questions
  • Notetaking mechanisms/formats
  • Content gathering strategies
  • Stakeholder identification & onboarding
  • Process Mapping
  • Agendas & Email comms
  • LO & Outcome-based mapping

Design

  • Instructional Design Document/High-level Design
  • Program Map/Syllabus Outline/Pacing Guide
  • Project Plan
  • Scripts
  • Wireframes/Storyboards
  • Style Guide

Development

  • Job aids: checklists, manuals, guides, worksheets, templates
  • eLearning: modules, mobile learning, microlearning, branching scenarios
  • Videos: Animation, Software tutorials, Bright Spot Interviews, Hype-up Videos
  • (v)ILTs: Engagement activities & Slide deck
  • Audio: Podcasts & VO

Implementation

  • Quality Assurance Process/Doc
  • Communication Strategy
  • Learning Campaign Plan
  • Train-the-Trainer materials: Facilitator Guide/Lesson Plans, Training recording, etc.
  • Onboarding Manuals (for supervisors of New Hire)

Evaluation

  • Feedback Forms/Requests
  • Program Assessments
  • Maintenance Documentation
  • Content List
  • Sunset meeting deck

Don't get overwhelmed. Remember this is a process, which means you're not creating everything all at once. I'm simply sharing here so you have all the context (and so you understand why you don't just want to focus on the final asset for your portfolio).

Remember, sometimes an ID gets to move through the entire design process (be it ADDIE or something else), and sometimes you're brought in when the Analysis has already been done and you're just in charge of the build. It truly depends on the organization you're with. But even if you're not a part of every stage, understanding the process supports you in making sure your part is as efficient as possible.

I'll be sharing more lessons like these in the future so keep an eye out!

a cracked toilet tank

Hi Reader! Did you know that toilet tanks can crack? If your house is plumbed a certain way, the hot water from a shower can back up into your toilet tank, heating up and expanding the porcelain. The cold water that replaces it then cracks the tank. And that tank will run all night trying to refill itself. And you'll wake up to a flooded house.... I'd like to put in some metaphor about how we can't continually try to fill ourselves up when there are cracks in our self-care. But seriously,...

Proficiency Check | Types of Subject-matter Experts & the Pros/Cons of Each Whether they're new to the process or a long-time SME, it's our job to guide them through the project so they know what to expect when. Let's discuss the SME types and how knowing these types supports your project's progress. (Seriously, figuring this out for me was 🤯) Whether you're using ADDIE or another design process, our subject matter experts aren't necessarily aware of what instructional design is, how the...

Bookshelves filled with books are shown.

Hi Reader! Holy cow, how is it almost the end of our first quarter?! I don't know about you, but for me, it feels like this Q has been a year... business stuff in flux, politics doing stuff nowhere on my bingo card, family chaos (though much of it good like my new nephew 😍). It's been a lot. And I'm sure life has been super lifey for you too, Reader. One way I've been calming my nervous system lately is by putting on my sleep mask and using my noise canceling headphones to listen to an...
